Finally, we have a full quarter of sales of the iPhone 17 models, and the results should make Apple and its shareholders pretty happy. Not only has Apple greatly simplified the iPhone model lineup, it has also continued to shift sales to the premium-priced Pro models. There might be some disappointment with iPhone Air sales.

Apple began selling the new iPhone 17 models on September 19, 2025. As a reminder, Apple updated the base, Pro, and Pro Max models, and introduced the new 17 Air model, which filled the slot formerly held by Plus models. After years of selling two- and three-year old iPhone models, the only legacy phones available now are the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. The 2025-release entry-level iPhone 16e is less than one-year old and therefore a current model.

The four current iPhone 17 models accounted for an unprecedented 80% of sales, the highest share we have seen for the newest models in a December quarter (Chart 1).
