Blended US iPhone Retail Price Up Slightly, Hitting New High
Since Apple stopped releasing an Average Selling Price (ASP) number for iPhones in 2018 - and actually before, CIRP uses its consumer research data to estimate a parallel metric. We calculate the weighted average retail price of iPhones sold in the US (US-WARP) each quarter to provide investors and Apple observers a single measure of iPhone model sales mix.
Like ASP, US-WARP shows the seasonality of the iPhone business, as different types of iPhone buyers purchase their new phones at different times of the year. It also highlights Apple’s success in selling premium phones and upgraded storage, and raising prices in some years. US-WARP does not measure the actual price consumers pay for their phones after trade-ins and promotions.
As the first full quarter of availability for the newly launched iPhones, the December quarter has traditionally had the highest US-WARP. The December 2022 quarter was no exception, with US-WARP reaching a new high of $972 (Chart 1).
