Anyone else surprised by the iPhones colors they are seeing in the wild lately?

Apple switches out colors when it launches new iPhone models each autumn. The colors often have evocative names. This past September, the iPhone 17 Air was introduced in Space Black, Cloud White, Sky Blue, and Light Gold. The new iPhone 17 (the base model) comes in Black, White, Mist Blue, Sage, and Lavender.

The new iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are offered in three colors: Silver, Deep Blue, and Cosmic Orange. Our past reviews of iPhone colors have shown most buyers choose fairly standard colors: black, followed by white (or silver), and then the rest of the choices.

There is no black or space gray or similar iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max this time around!

Not since the iPhone 5C in 2013 has Apple introduced a new phone without a black or near-black option. And the 5C was an inexpensive, polycarbonate (plastic?) entry-level phone, not a top-of-the-line $1099+ model. So, what happens when there is no black iPhone? Apparently, buyers gravitate to Cosmic Orange (Chart 1).
