Before iPads, iPhones, Apple Watches, and even iPods, there were Macs. From the Apple 2 to today, with some notable ups and downs, Macs and PCs have competed in the US personal computer market. In its current state, the market is divided between the original desktops and later laptops, and by usage: personal, business, and education.

Mac laptops now drive Apple's personal computer business. Laptops account for 74% of units over the past year and have remained at around that level for the past several years. Apple laptop sales are divided evenly between the more powerful and expensive MacBook Pro models (54%) and lighter, less costly MacBook Air models (46%) (Table 1).
